Who is Thomas F. Feiner?

A pioneer in applied neuroscience

Thomas F. Feiner is Founder and Director of the Institute for EEG-Neurofeedback (IFEN) in Munich and the IFEN QEEG Research Unit. For more than 20 years, he has focused on quantitative EEG analysis, event-related potentials, neurofeedback and neuromodulation.

His work combines evidence-based EEG diagnostics with individual neurofeedback protocols and innovative EEG technology for practitioners, clinics and research institutions worldwide. He also holds an Honorary Professorship at the Faculty of Contemplative and Behavioural Sciences, Sri Sri University, India, and is an appointed professor at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca (UPSA), teaching in the Master Degree in Applied Brain Mapping — the first master's programme in quantitative electroencephalography. In addition, he is studying functional medicine at Functional Medicine University.

Patents and protocols

He invented the FRee-Cap—a reusable saline-sponge multichannel EEG cap—and holds two US patents: US 11,647,956 “Electroencephalogram system and method” (granted 16 May 2023) and US design patent D1,115,036 “Electrode” (granted 24 February 2026), both assigned to Neurofeedback-Partner GmbH. He also developed IFEN-Pro-Z for modern Z-score neurofeedback and the IFEN SCP protocol for slow cortical potential training.

Software and research partnerships

He created Neuropathfinder, a research and teaching platform for EEG and QEEG analysis, co-developed ERP software with neuroscientist and neurologist Dr Garner, and developed CAPITO, a platform for reaction time, sustained attention, impulse control and ERP stimulus paradigms. His collaborations include studies on gamma asymmetry and emotional decision-making with Dr Thomas Collura and Dr Ron Bonnstetter, research on heart-evoked potentials with Dr Rollin McCraty, and many years on Dr Joe Dispenza's brain research team involving more than 10,000 brain maps of meditators.

International education

He teaches QEEG, ERP and neurofeedback internationally, helping professionals interpret brain activity with precision. IFEN courses are recognised as a reference in professional neuroscience education, with more than 300 workshops and webinars since 2008. He is an appointed professor at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca (UPSA), teaching in the Master Degree in Applied Brain Mapping — the first master's programme in quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG). He also supervises students from international universities including LMU and TMU and co-teaches with Thomas F. Collura and Giuseppe Chiarenza.

My interest in the brain began early. I wanted to understand how we learn, how emotions arise and why people perceive and act so differently. Today, working with patients, teaching and developing my own research tools are all part of my life. What brings these areas together is the question of how we can use our knowledge about the brain to support people better.

A first formative experience came during my civilian service, which I completed after my time in the armed forces. There I met people with psychological and emotional difficulties and got to know the work of occupational therapists. I saw how much it can mean to open up new possibilities in someone's everyday life. That touched me and gave my professional future a direction.

I decided to train as an occupational therapist and began working in 1991. During my training and in the years that followed, I became increasingly occupied with how behaviour, attention and emotions relate to the way the brain works. I wanted to understand these connections and use them in my therapeutic work.

Children with learning difficulties and my first developments

In my own practice I worked with many children with ADD, ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia. I looked for ways to assess their difficulties more precisely and to support them specifically. In the process I developed worksheets and practice materials for learning therapy, continued my own education and gave training courses on learning and attention disorders.

Even in those years my therapeutic work connected with another passion: software development. My first own software was called Senso-X. It was created for training auditory perception and central auditory processing. I was fascinated that I could translate an idea from practice into a tool other people could work with.

Teaching also took a firm place in my life early on. From 1999 to 2004 I taught in occupational therapy training at Schmid-Döpfer in Schwandorf. From the early 2000s I expanded my continuing education work further. As a child I had always wanted to become a teacher. Now I noticed how much joy it gave me to explain connections and to see others find their own path with that knowledge.

Encountering neurofeedback

On a trip to the United States I read an article about neurofeedback in an American professional journal. The idea of measuring brain activity and enabling a learning process through feedback fascinated me immediately. I sensed that this approach could significantly broaden my work.

I wanted to understand better which neurophysiological processes were connected with my patients' difficulties. Neurofeedback opened up the possibility of including measurable aspects of brain activity alongside observable behaviour.

At an international conference I got to know the method more closely and had the privilege of meeting pioneers such as Barry Sterman, Joel Lubar and Joe Kamiya in person. Learning from people who had decisively shaped this field was something special for me. These encounters encouraged me to engage intensively with neurofeedback.

As one of the early neurofeedback therapists in Germany, I was nevertheless uncertain during the first applications. I had experience as an occupational therapist, but here I had to learn a great deal anew, observe closely and review my decisions.

What gave me courage were the changes I saw in my patients. Some developments I had not seen in my previous therapeutic work. In addition there was feedback from doctors and teachers. That changes were also noticed outside the practice meant a lot to me.

Of course neurofeedback is not the only method, and not everyone responds in the same way. But these experiences motivated me to keep learning. Quantitative EEG, or QEEG, became increasingly important. I wanted to understand brain activity in a more differentiated way, recognise measurement errors and artefacts, and justify my decisions better professionally.

Intensive further training, international exchange and my qualifications as a BCIA-certified neurofeedback therapist and QEEG Diplomate of the International QEEG Certification Board followed.

It felt as if I had found a key that opened a door which had been closed until then.

From occupational therapy to applied neuroscience

    Qualified and began working as an occupational therapist.
